The filter cartridge is a consumable part that does the actual filtering — the housing stays on the machine and only the cartridge is replaced. This is a much cheaper solution than replacing the complete filter and is intended for regular maintenance.

A saturated cartridge raises resistance in the system and opens the bypass valve, after which unfiltered oil goes directly into the system. That is why the service interval is observed rather than waiting for a visible sign of failure.
