The cone is the sealing element inside the hydraulic valve – it sits on the seat and holds pressure in the closed position. When the seating surface wears or is damaged by a particle, the valve starts to leak.

The symptom is a body that slowly sinks in the raised position, or pressure that does not hold. Replacing the cone is much cheaper than replacing the whole valve.
