The upper ball is the pivot support on which the cylinder rests against the body. The ball joint allows slight swiveling during tipping and prevents bending of the piston rod.

A worn ball can be recognized by play and knocking when the body starts to move. Left too long, it transfers the load to the piston rod and destroys the entire cylinder.
