The guide ring centers the piston rod in the cylinder tube and prevents metal-to-metal contact between them. It takes the side loads instead of the seals.

When the guide wears out, the piston rod starts to rest on the tube and quickly destroys the seals. It is always replaced together with the overhaul kit, not on its own.
