The lip seal seals a moving joint and holds oil under pressure on one side. It is made of NBR rubber, a material compatible with hydraulic oil and usual operating temperatures.

An unsuitable material swells or hardens and fails very quickly, so the lip seal is chosen by the oil medium and not only by dimension.
