The oil level in the tank changes while the cylinders work, so the tank has to breathe air in and out. The air filter lets air pass while retaining dust and moisture — without it, contaminants from the environment go straight into the oil.

This is the cheapest filter in the system and the one most often forgotten. It is especially important when working on construction sites, in quarries and on dusty terrain.
