The return filter is installed on the line through which oil returns from the system to the tank. This is exactly where the oil carries the most particles produced by wear of cylinders, valves and the pump, so this filter contributes most to the cleanliness of the whole system.

If it is not replaced on time, contaminants settle in the tank and accelerate pump wear. Replacement is done as part of regular service, most often together with the oil.
